A Spinning Black Hole

In 1963, mathematician Roy Kerr solved Einstein's equations for a rotating black hole — the kind that actually exists out there (Schwarzschild's 1916 solution doesn't spin).

The disk's left side burns brighter: that's doppler beaming — matter hurtling toward you at a fraction of light speed. The thin halo is the photon ring.
